With the goal of ensuring that all people, regardless of their location, socioeconomic level or technological skills, have equitable access to the digital tools and knowledge necessary to actively participate in modern society, the Puerto Rico Broadband program, better known as Smart Island, joined the National Inclusion Alliance and its more than 1,800 affiliates in Digital Inclusion Week (DIW) being observed through Friday.

With the theme “Together We Are Stronger: Mobilizing Toward Sustainability,” DIW highlights the power of collaboration to ensure the longevity of the digital equity movement. By fostering a strong digital inclusion ecosystem that connects digital inclusion initiatives in communities, long-term digital inclusion solutions are being promoted throughout Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Broadband Executive Director Michelle Cabiya Zorrilla said “this initiative, which is held annually in all states and territories, seeks to promote digital inclusion at the community, government and business levels.”

“In Puerto Rico, we will be … promoting digital inclusion through a series of initiatives that include participation in person and in virtual events, cybersecurity training for older adults, awareness and education on digital literacy, and educational content on the program’s social networks,” she said.

Cabiya Zorrilla added that the island State Department included the week of Oct. 7-11 in the government’s calendar of official proclamations, officially making it Digital Inclusion Week in Puerto Rico.

“We are definitely proud to receive this proclamation and to be part of Digital Inclusion Week,” she said. “Puerto Rico is at a crucial moment in terms of access to high-speed internet and these initiatives help us continue promoting our programs and efforts to close the digital divide in Puerto Rico.”
