Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez announced on Tuesday the start of the reconstruction process for a dock used by members of the Ranger Corps on the offshore island municipality of Culebra.

With an investment of $926,359.44 in funds mandated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the new facility in the San Ildefonso area of Culebra will be used for the rangers’ maritime operations, including preventive patrols, operations, coastal interventions, and assistance in reef rehabilitation efforts, among others.

“This structure is vital for our rangers’ operations in that area,” Quiles said in a written statement.

The reconstruction work includes the replacement of some 16 concrete piles, replacement of support timbers, installation of new rubber fenders around the entire pier, a new access gate, and the installation of approximately five mooring piles.

In addition, the boat ramp will be rehabilitated, expanding it to around 60 feet, and debris will be removed from the area, among other improvements.

The pier, for the exclusive use of the DNER and other law enforcement agencies, has been inoperative for several years.

“This is a project we discussed with the mayor of Culebra, Ediberto ‘Junito’ Romero, as well as with the rangers stationed at the San Ildefonso station,” said Quiles, who visited the area on Monday, along with several members of the Ranger Corps. “This historic renovation will make it easier and faster to use the boat assigned to us on the island municipality, as well as the jet ski used for rapid response. This work is necessary and will soon be a reality.”
