University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (RUM by its acronym in Spanish) Interim Chancellor Miguel Muñoz Muñoz announced on Wednesday that the university administration and the General Student Council have reached agreements to conclude student protests and guarantee free access to the campus.

“These agreements represent an important step for our university community,” Muñoz Muñoz said in written remarks. “We will continue to foster spaces for communication and understanding that allow us to address institutional matters within an environment of respect and collegial coexistence.”

As part of the agreements, both parties reaffirmed the right to free expression and peaceful protest.

They also established commitments regarding academic continuity, collegial coexistence and access to campus facilities.

University authorities and student representatives agreed to maintain institutional mechanisms for dialogue, mediation and communication to address matters concerning the RUM community.

“In the exercise of free expression, we reaffirm the right of the student body, as well as faculty and non-faculty staff, to have free access to the institution’s facilities and to ensure the continuity of academic and administrative operations,” the interim chancellor said.

Muñoz emphasized that the campus will uphold its long-standing academic mission.

“As a century-old institution, we maintain our mission to continue educating professionals of excellence and citizens committed to Puerto Rico,” he said.
