San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced on Wednesday the activation of a preventive security plan during the holiday season, in effect from earlier this week to Jan. 7, 2026, with reinforcements in the tourist zone and on the main roads of the municipality.

“We maintain a constant evaluation of our strategies and make the necessary adjustments to ensure that our people and those who visit us feel safe on the streets at all times,” Romero Lugo said in a written statement. He noted that as part of the plan, 48 new municipal police officers were integrated into the tourist zone, bringing the total number of officers assigned to that sector to 88, through a sectorization model that divides the area into six sectors for active surveillance.

“The strengthening of the tourist area is part of a clear strategy of prevention and increased police presence,” San Juan Municipal Police Commissioner Juan Jackson said.

According to officials, the plan, which took effect on Tuesday, includes patrols on foot, motorcycles, bicycles and four-wheel-drive vehicles, as well as the participation of the maritime unit and divers in coastal areas. Surveillance is supported by two continuously operating police stations, 84 security cameras, and six call boxes.

During the holiday season, municipal police will reinforce surveillance on state roads that cross San Juan and in high-traffic areas such as La Placita de Santurce, Calle Cerra, and Old San Juan.

By this time in 2024, 35 fatal accidents had been recorded, while so far in 2025 the figure is 31.
