Training workshops to address coastal erosion during hurricane season

The Puerto Rico Coastal Research and Planning Institute, affiliated with the Graduate School of Planning at the University of Puerto Rico’s (UPR) Río Piedras Campus, announced Monday that it will offer training workshops on erosion and coastal planning to strengthen decision-making and fundraising efforts in municipalities across the island.
“Coastal erosion will continue with hurricanes, storm surges, and flooding,” Dr. Maritza Barreto in a written statement. “That is why it is vital to bring science and planning to municipalities and organizations to adequately address it.”
UPR Río Piedras Campus Chancellor Dr. Angélica Varela Llavona emphasized that the initiative highlights the value of the research conducted at the institution and the academic leadership of the project team. She thanked the island Housing Department for its support.
The workshops are funded with $2.442 million from the Housing Department’s Community Development Mitigation Block Grant to Enhance Planning and Training. The project, titled “Capacity Building in Coastal Erosion and Planning in Puerto Rico,” seeks to integrate scientific knowledge into municipal and community processes.
Each session spans two days, from 8:30 a.m. to 4: p.m., and includes topics such as beach geomorphology, dune formation and change, and the use of scientific and technical resources. The workshops cover the influence of climate on erosion, the use of geographic information systems to study the coast, and mitigation options. Participants are also guided through a planning analysis to identify strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats, and define courses of action.
The training is free and is aimed at municipal planning, emergency management, and federal proposal offices, as well as non-governmental organizations working with coastal municipalities. The workshops will conclude in November, and collaborative activities with participants will extend through April 2026.
To date, sessions have been held in Fajardo, Caguas and Bayamón. The next sessions will be: Sept. 11 and 12 in Barceloneta (Arecibo region); Sept. 25 and 26 in Aguadilla (Mayagüez region); Oct. 1 and 2 at the Antiguo Casino de Ponce (Ponce region); Oct. 16 and 17 at the Culebra Multipurpose Center; and Oct. 13. and Nov. 14 at the Vieques Multipurpose Center.
