Uber announced Tuesday that it will implement new security tools and features in Puerto Rico to provide greater protection for its driver partners, including a verified user badge and encrypted video recording through the app.
“At Uber, we are committed to the safety of our driver partners. After listening to their feedback and their desire to have more information about user verification, we have developed solutions that address their priorities,” said Manuela Bedoya, Uber’s safety communications manager for the Andean, Caribbean and Central American region, in a written statement.
The new user verification process includes reviewing account details such as names and phone numbers against third-party databases. Users will also be able to upload a government-issued ID to earn a “Verified” badge, which will be visible to drivers before accepting a ride.
In addition, Uber introduced a feature that allows recording the interior of the vehicle using the front camera on the driver’s phone. The video is encrypted and can only be sent to Uber’s support team in the event of a report.
“In the event of an eventuality such as an accident or argument, driver partners can send the recording to the support team to facilitate investigation and take appropriate action,” Bedoya said. “This technology protects privacy: the video is stored on the device and no one can access it unless it is attached to a report.”
The new tools do not require external devices or represent additional costs, offering greater peace of mind to both drivers and users. With them, Uber adds to the more than 30 functions already available in Puerto Rico.
