Young university students studying engineering and cybersecurity joined the Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service (PRITS) this summer as part of the Luis A. Ferré Executive Internship Program, an initiative that gives them the opportunity to gain professional experience in public service and contribute to the technological development of the island government.

The students, from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico and Inter-American University of Puerto Rico’s Bayamón Campus, selected PRITS to be part of their internship experience and learn firsthand about the projects and initiatives that drive the digital transformation of government.

As part of their integration into the agency, the participants held a meeting with PRITS Executive Director Poincaré Díaz Peña, during which they discussed their professional expectations, the reasons that motivated them to choose the agency, and the role of technology in the modernization of government services.

“Puerto Rico needs to continue developing a new generation of professionals trained to face the technological challenges of the present and the future,” Díaz Peña said. “Programs like the Luis A. Ferré Executive Internship allow students to learn firsthand how innovation, cybersecurity, and digital transformation contribute to strengthening the services our citizens receive.”

The PRITS director also gave a talk to the interns at the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority focused on the importance of cybersecurity awareness and the measures that citizens can take to protect themselves from threats in the digital environment.

Díaz Peña emphasized the need to adopt safe online practices, protect personal information, identify fraud attempts and use tools that strengthen digital security.
