University of Puerto Rico (UPR) President Zayira Jordán Conde announced on Wednesday the official launch of UPR Virtual, a platform that consolidates the system’s fully online academic programs, professional certificates and short courses.
The launch comes amid student strikes at a trio of UPR campuses, including the UPR system’s two largest, calling for Jordán Conde’s resignation, driven by dissatisfaction with her performance. She made the announcement along with 11 campus chancellors and the executive director of the Molecular Sciences Center.
University officials said the initiative aligns with Gov. Jenniffer González Colón’s policy agenda to strengthen the UPR as a driver of innovation and economic development by expanding access through digital transformation and online course offerings.
Officials described UPR Virtual as part of a broader push to expand access for students in Puerto Rico and beyond, while boosting the institution’s global reach and building a more resilient model for delivering higher education.
The portal brings together degree programs, professional certifications and short courses offered entirely online, aiming to provide a more flexible pathway for traditional and nontraditional students.
UPR currently offers 28 programs, including 21 degree-granting tracks and seven professional and graduate certificates, which officials said already serve more than 700 students online across the university system.
Jordán Conde said the initiative is intended to help the university “adapt to today’s realities without compromising excellence or quality,” while expanding its reach and supporting Puerto Rico’s innovation and economic development goals.
Edna M. Chaar Santana, vice president for professional and distance programs, said the portal is meant to simplify the search for online options by presenting the systemwide offerings in a single place.
Ilka Ríos Reyes, vice president for academic affairs and research, said the system’s online portfolio is expanding and includes programs designed to meet workforce demand and areas of specialization.
Officials also cited an expanded membership in the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements, or NC-SARA, which they said helps ensure quality standards, protects student rights and facilitates offering online programs outside Puerto Rico.
The platform is designed to serve working adults, nontraditional students, professionals seeking new credentials and international students, according to university officials.
Alfred Díaz Meléndez, associate vice president for student affairs, said the portal is set up so prospective students can explore programs and complete an application online.
University leaders said UPR Virtual is part of a broader strategy to expand access through technology and strengthen the institution’s national and international presence in online higher education.
The UPR said it expects the portal to support continued growth in online offerings across the system.
