The president of the General Student Council at the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus (UPR-RUM), Tainary Delgado, announced that the council has approved an indefinite strike calling for the removal of UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde and RUM Interim Chancellor Miguel Muñoz Muñoz.

Although Delgado insisted that the action being taken is not technically a strike, the student leader urged the university community not to cross picket lines established as part of the protest.

“We want a national assembly to be coordinated and to stop political interference within the University of Puerto Rico. Since our president took office in July, all processes have been handled behind closed doors, and when we demand transparency -- when we ask for reports and metrics -- she is not open to dialogue,” Delgado said. “In addition, having Muñoz in a position of trust appointed by the president only increases distrust.”

Delgado also addressed the suspension of financial aid provided by Fundación Ceiba for university students, stating that the pause has created concern and academic instability within the student body.

The indefinite demonstration has been in effect since a special assembly held on Monday, and will continue until students receive concrete responses and actions addressing their demands, the student leader added.
