The Autonomous Municipality of Vega Baja announced Thursday the launch of a new electronic equipment recycling initiative as part of its commitment to protecting the environment and the health of its citizens.
The campaign, administered through the town’s Office of Environmental Health, Transportation and General Services, in partnership with ReciclaTuCel, seeks to raise awareness about the importance of properly disposing of electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets and video game consoles, which contain highly polluting toxic materials such as lead, cadmium and mercury. When disposed of improperly, the materials can enter the soil, water and ecosystems, causing serious consequences for public health and the environment.
“In Vega Baja, we continue taking firm steps toward a more sustainable future,” Mayor Marcos Cruz Molina said. “With this initiative, we not only promote environmental education, but we also offer our citizens a safe and responsible alternative for managing electronic equipment they no longer use.”
The collection center will be located at the town’s Recycling Office, on the premises of the aforementioned office, on Highway 687 at the Tortuguero Recreational Area (behind the soldier monument).
For more information, citizens can contact (787) 855-2500 ext. 3312 or send an email to reciclario@vegabaja.gov.pr.
