A woman was injured earlier this week in an attack involving fireworks while walking on Norzagaray Street in Old San Juan.

San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced Tuesday that directly following the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Monday, the San Juan Municipal Police launched an investigation utilizing all available resources.

“This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the mayor said. “In the capital city, we have been clear that security is non-negotiable and that any action that endangers people’s lives will have consequences. We will use every tool at our disposal to identify those responsible and prosecute them according to the law.”

San Juan Municipal Police Commissioner Juan Jackson Rodríguez said the incident was confirmed through the municipality’s electronic surveillance system and the license plate readers installed in Old San Juan, which along with AI tools allowed investigators to identify the vehicle involved within hours of the incident.

“This type of technology allows us to respond more quickly and accurately,” Jackson stated.

According to the preliminary investigation, the incident occurred at around 2:50 a.m., when the victim was walking with two other women and a pet. The woman reported to the Municipal Police that what she described as fireworks were thrown at her from inside a vehicle. As a result of the attack, the woman suffered a wound to her left calf. Paramedics arrived promptly at the scene to provide medical assistance.

On Tuesday morning, authorities seized a Honda CR-V in the Puerto Nuevo section of San Juan as part of the investigation.

“I want to reiterate that in San Juan we are not letting our guard down [...],” Romero Lugo said. “This case is ongoing and will be solved.”
