At state legislators convention in Boston, Álvarez Conde stresses importance of female participation in politics

Popular Democratic Party (PDP) at-large Sen. Ada Álvarez Conde participated this week in the United States Conference of State Legislators Convention in Boston, where she emphasized the importance of female participation in the political process.

“Here in the United States, as around the world, women politicians are making history,” the senator said. “For example, this is the first time a woman has been elected governor of the state of Massachusetts, Maura Healy, and it’s the third time a woman has been elected president of the Senate, Karen Spilka. In these meetings I’ve had and with people I’ve met, I mentioned that I am the only woman to run at-large for the PDP and that I was president of the party’s women’s organization. All of these experiences have led to legislation focused on many issues affecting Puerto Rican families.”

Regarding her trip to Boston for the meeting, Álvarez Conde noted that “I am a senator at all times. If I am anywhere working for Puerto Rico, I will say so, report on it, and be accountable.”

“If there are people doing other things, let them handle it,” she said. “It’s worse to deny it or lie to them. This week, in particular, there is news about the expulsion of board members, the arrival of new ones, and the restructuring of PREPA’s debt. These are important issues, both national and federal.”

Also a leader of the “Peace Promoters,” a group that works on preventing dating violence, Álvarez Conde was emphatic that her focus is not on working for the next elections but rather for future generations. During her seven months in the Senate, she has introduced measures to address various needs, from food waste prevention to the definition of the maritime terrestrial zone, climate change, and the regulation of the sale of domestic animals, among many others.
