Agents from the Air and Marine Operations (AMO) of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted a 41-foot vessel carrying 13 undocumented immigrants near Combate Beach in Cabo Rojo.

“This successful interdiction demonstrates the unwavering commitment and vigilance of the Michel Maceda Marine Unit in protecting our nation’s borders,” said Christopher Hunter, director of the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch, in a written statement. “By intercepting this vessel before it reached the shores of Puerto Rico, we have maintained the integrity of our maritime security and the safety of our communities.”

According to the agency, an AMO agent detected and tracked the sailboat as it approached the west coast of Puerto Rico. With the assistance of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Puerto Rico Police Force’s Rapid Action Unit, CBP detained the vessel and escorted it to the Michel Unit for inspection.

On board were 10 men from Uzbekistan, a woman from Kyrgyzstan, and two men from Russia, none of whom had documentation authorizing their legal entry or residence in the United States.

The immigrants were apprehended and transferred in good health to special agents from Homeland Security Investigations for processing.
