Celebrated basketball coach Igartúa Muñoz dies at 83

The Municipality of Quebradillas has reported the recent passing of Iván Igartúa Muñoz, a former coach of the Quebradillas Pirates basketball team and former coach of the Puerto Rico men’s national basketball team.


He was 83 years old.


“The Municipal Administration of Quebradillas joins the grief that overwhelms the Igartúa family after the departure of Iván Igartúa Muñoz who was a bulwark in sports in our beloved town of Quebradillas,” the municipality said in a statement. “Iván Igartúa left an indelible mark on the community where he accomplished great achievements in basketball and exalted the colors of our flag as an athlete, educator and community leader. The community joins in prayer and solidarity with his family, friends, and colleagues.”
