The island Education Department will begin implementing on Friday the Parent Portal, a digital platform designed to allow mothers, fathers and guardians to directly monitor the academic performance and attendance of students in the public school system.

“We have invested, and the department has been investing, in technology for communication, for information gathering, and for data management,” said Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés at a press conference.

The official said the portal will allow parents to access grades, daily attendance and evaluations in real time, and receive direct notifications from the schools.

“Starting tomorrow, the parent portal will be launched at the Department of Education so that parents can be more connected with the school regarding grades and attendance in real time,” Ramos Parés said.

The Education chief noted that school principals will provide parents with an individual code for each student, which will be used to initially access the system and then consolidate multiple profiles into a single account.

“Those with three children won’t have to make three separate entries; once they log in and access their student’s profile, they will have them all consolidated in a single profile,” he said.

Ramos Parés added that the initiative seeks to facilitate family involvement in school life, even when parents have demanding work schedules.

“We know that many of our parents also work, but that doesn’t diminish their sense of responsibility to stay connected with the school,” he said.
