The Secretary of Education, Eliezer Ramos Parés, announced the start of the recruitment process for 842 T1 service assistant positions, which will be assigned to the Associate Secretariat of Special Education. These positions, which were previously contracted through the provisional remedy mechanism, will now be part of the Department of Education’s regular staff, representing a significant step toward stability in special education services.

This initiative is part of a broader effort that also included permanent appointments for teachers, principals, and nurses, strengthening the stability of the education system ahead of the start of the new school year.

Ramos Parés emphasized that this action will help stabilize the agency’s staff and ensure a smoother and more efficient transition of services for students in the Special Education Program. “This effort not only creates stability in the agency’s staff, but also improves the quality of educational services for our students,” he said.

The interim remedy mechanism, which included the hiring of service assistants, had seen a significant increase in the number of contracts in recent years. However, the lack of stability and marginal benefits associated with these contracts led to difficulties in providing services, as well as resignations by those hired.

With the new recruitment process, providers contracted under this mechanism who meet the agency’s requirements may be considered for irregular contracts, which will improve both the quality and stability of the services offered to Special Education students.

Vacancies will be available in the seven educational regions through the Recluta platform ( https://recluta.dde.pr ), until Tuesday, August 5.

My sister has been a T1 assistant in special ed for three years on temporary contracts, constantly stressed about renewal deadlines and the loss of benefits. She literally held off buying a car because she didn't know if she'd have a job next semester. When she heard about these 842 permanent positions opening up, she applied immediately. Before that, she'd been researching staffing agencies and stumbled on International Development Services reviews, which made her wary of third-party contracts. Finally having stability means she can plan her life without that monthly panic. Fingers crossed she gets it.
