Housing Secretary William Rodríguez Rodríguez, along with Camuy Mayor Gabriel Hernández Rodríguez, delivered five relocation vouchers from the Home Repair, Reconstruction or Relocation (R3) program under Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funds to families who suffered damage to their houses after hurricanes Irma and Maria and who will now be able to obtain resilient and secure homes.

The five families join the 3,787 families that the program has already assisted with a new home.

“We continue at a steady pace focused on the reconstruction of Puerto Rico, which has been our priority from day one and the assignment that Gov. Pedro Pierluisi gave us,” Rodríguez said. “Today we make the dream of these Camuyan families in so much need come true and we reaffirm our commitment to ensure that each Puerto Rican family can have a safe, dignified and resilient roof over their heads. I thank the mayor for his management and follow-up to make this a fact.”

The mayor said that “what we are witnessing today is an act of justice for these families who have waited for more than 11 years for a safe and decent home.”

“I am pleased that Secretary Rodríguez has listened to our demands on behalf of these citizens and that the governor’s commitments are fulfilled in these acts,” Hernández said. “On behalf of these families, we express our thanks and trust that we can continue working together for the well being of our people.”

The R3 program requires each rebuilt home to meet current building codes and a green building standard, ensuring that homes are strong, durable and safe.
