Governor Assures PREPA retirees will receive pension payments as schedule

Governor Jenniffer González Colón assured on Wednesday that the pension payments to retirees of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) will be made on Thursday, July 31, as scheduled, and that the necessary funds have already been transferred.
“The payments will be made July 31. In May, PREPA confirmed it would stick to the original pension payment dates, so they will be paid on July 31,” the governor said in response to press questions during a conference held in the municipality of Gurabo.
According to the governor, the required procedures have been completed and the money is available. “I have information that the funds were transferred. I don’t know where this rumor is coming from, but it wouldn’t be the first time this kind of claim is made. I’m happy to verify exactly when the transfer occurred,” she added.
The governor’s statements come after the PREPA Retirees Association claimed on Wednesday that the payment would not be made, alleging that the Treasury Department had failed to transfer the necessary funds to the Retirement System.
Johnny Rodríguez Ortiz, president of the Association, said in a written statement that the transfer had not been completed and that Retirement System staff were ready to process the payments as soon as the funds were received. However, the bank requires at least 24 hours to clear the transactions.
Rodríguez Ortiz also blamed the government, LUMA Energy, and PREPA for the situation, denouncing what he described as a chain of negligence. He warned that a similar situation could arise in September if a permanent solution is not implemented.
The organization has called for a protest in front of the Financial Oversight and Management Board offices in Hato Rey to demand a clear resolution. According to PREPA, the July and August payments are being funded through a loan approved by the board.
