Gov. Jenniffer González Colón led the official Memorial Day ceremony at the Atlantic Garden Veterans Cemetery in Aguadilla on Monday.


“It is a privilege for me to be present as governor at the Memorial Day ceremonies at the Atlantic Garden Veterans Cemetery in Aguadilla, the first time in seven years that a governor has participated,” González Colón said in a written statement.


The governor was accompanied by her husband, Dr. José Yovín Vargas Llavona, at the event organized to honor members of the armed forces who have fallen in the line of duty.


In her message, the governor highlighted the history of the military service of Puerto Ricans since 1900 and reaffirmed her commitment to the veteran community. She recalled her history as the author of the Veterans Bill of Rights as a state legislator and as a former resident commissioner in the U.S. Congress, where she promoted measures and federal funding for medical services, health centers and benefits for the veteran population.


Also present during the event were Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán and municipal first lady Griselle Villanueva; Sens. Gregorio Matías, Ada Álvarez Conde and Jason Rosa; Reps. Wilson Román, Emilio Carlo and Odalys González; Veterans’ Advocate Agustín Montañez; National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Miguel Méndez; and United States Coast Guard Commandant Capt. Luis Rodríguez, among other officials and representatives of military organizations.
