As part of the response to the public health emergency caused by the dengue epidemic declared at the beginning of the year, the island Department of Health is establishing a community dengue testing center at the Doctor Ramón Ruiz Arnau University Hospital (HURRA) in Bayamón.

The center, which aims to strengthen strategies for detecting and diagnosing the disease. will operate from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer free dengue screening tests to all those who have a medical order.

“It is essential to detect the virus in time and start appropriate treatment to avoid complications,” Health Secretary Carlos Mellado López said. “For this reason, we established this diagnostic testing center to address the fight against dengue. This testing center is in addition to the influenza and COVID-19 testing center that we offer at HURRA in Bayamón.”

“It is important to remember that the symptoms of dengue, influenza and COVID-19 can be similar,” the island’s top physician added. “These include high fever, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, weakness, headache, nausea and vomiting. Although the intensity of these symptoms varies depending on the disease, it is crucial that people consult a health professional to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.”

The public is invited to take advantage of the service to ensure early detection and timely treatment of dengue. More information, including guidance on dengue, can be obtained by writing to the email arboviral@salud.pr.gov. Citizens are also encouraged to visit www.salud.pr.gov/dengue to access educational material on symptom recognition, prevention measures, clinical management, home care and vaccination centers around the island.
