The Brotherhood of Non-Teaching Exempt Employees (HEEND by its acronym in Spanish) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) announced on Tuesday that it will hold a 24-hour strike starting on Thursday to demand compliance with the collective bargaining agreement negotiated with the university administration.
“We will demand that the administration guarantee the validity of the collective agreement, which was negotiated with great effort and responsibility,” said Carlos de León, president of HEEND, in a written statement.
“If there is no immediate solution, we have declared a 24-hour strike that will begin this Thursday, October 24,” he added. “We demand that the administration immediately resolve the controversy.”
HEEND has been summoned to the Department of Labor and Human Resources’ Conciliation and Arbitration Office today, where the union will request the intervention of the UPR governing board and its chairman, Ricardo Dalmau, to ensure compliance with the ratified agreements.
According to the union, since the culmination of the negotiation last December, it has faced difficulties in the implementation of the collective agreement that went into force on July 1 of this year.
HEEND reaffirmed its commitment to the defense of labor rights and the search for fair solutions for all its members.
