The Puerto Rico Police Bureau reported Monday that agents assigned to the district of Orocovis filed criminal charges for mistreatment of the elderly against Christian Moisés Cartagena Berríos, 40, a resident of that municipality.
According to the police investigation, the events occurred this past Saturday, when Cartagena Berríos had a struggle with his mother, whom he grabbed by the arms and threw against a wall. In addition, he punched his elderly father, an Alzheimer’s patient, in the back.
According to the report, prosecutor Ámbar Ramos instructed the filing of two charges under Article 127A of the Criminal Code. The evidence was presented before Judge Miriam Stefan Acta of the Aibonito Court, who found cause for arrest and imposed bail of $100,000. When Cartagena Berríos did not provide it, he was admitted to Las Cucharas Correctional Complex in Ponce.
The preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 2. Agent Liz Quiñones is in charge of the investigation, under the supervision of Lt Guzmán.
