La Monserrate Spa in Luquillo will be the setting for the third edition of the Beach Water Polo Pro Classic, a beach polo tournament in which representatives from Puerto Rico and six countries will participate this Friday to Sunday.

“For the Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD) it is an honor to be part of this effort that positions Puerto Rico as a destination of excellence to practice beach polo,” DRD Secretary Ray Quiñones Vázquez said in a written statement. “For this third edition, which is part of the DRD International Series, we expect close to 500 participants from the United States, Costa Rica, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and, of course, Puerto Rico.”

The 30 teams that are part of the Beach Water Polo Pro Classic will be divided into three categories: 16 men’s open, eight women’s open and the remaining six 18U men’s.

“The refereeing and direction of the matches will be carried out in compliance with the rules of beach water polo provided by the international organization World Aquatics,” said Jean Pierre Mujica, director of the Puerto Rican Swimming Federation’s Water Polo Commission.

This year the awards were designed and made by craftsman Pedro Santiago Martínez from the Correctional Educational Institute of the Department of Correction and Rehabilitation.

It should be noted that during the weekend free water polo classes will be offered for children from eight to 13 years old.

The event will be broadcast on the DRD’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. Admission is free.
