San Juan Mayor Miguel A. Romero Lugo recently announced the regulations for granting permits, authorizations, and commercial licenses for the upcoming San Sebastián Street Festival, scheduled from January 16 to January 19, 2025.
The rules are outlined in Ordinance No. 5 Series 2024-2025, aiming to ensure an orderly, safe, and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the cultural event in Puerto Rico, according to a statement Saturday.
Mayor Romero Lugo emphasized the importance of maintaining the historical and tourist appeal of Old San Juan while fostering a sense of community during the festivities. He said, “We want this event to be memorable for all participants by maintaining order and respecting our communities.”
The regulated commercial activities include installing and using promotional inflatables, distributing and displaying promotional materials, utilizing balconies for commercial promotions or advertising, temporary signage in public or private spaces within the Isleta de San Juan, and organizing commercial parades. The mayor hopes these regulations will balance festive celebrations and maintain the city’s cultural integrity during the San Sebastián Street Festival.
The Municipal Permits Office will rigorously evaluate each application submitted, requiring the necessary documentation to ensure compliance with these regulations. In case of non-compliance, officials may deny the permit. In addition, officials may seek clarifications or additional information to comply with the established security and order objectives.
“These regulations are not an absolute prohibition on commercial expression, but rather a necessary and reasonable regulation to safeguard the security and orderly enjoyment of the Festivals. Our objective is that all activities are coordinated and in harmony with the civic and cultural spirit that characterizes this event,” Romero Lugo stressed.
Official sponsors of the Fiestas and Municipal contractors will be exempt from requesting permits, provided they comply with the provisions of this Ordinance, including the security measures stipulated in their contracts. All promotional material must be removed no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, to ensure the cleanliness of public spaces.
“I invite all sectors, both merchants and organizers, to work hand in hand with our team so that these Fiestas truly celebrate our culture and hospitality. With your collaboration, we will make the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián 2025 unforgettable and a model of order and cultural pride for all of Puerto Rico,” concluded Romero Lugo.
