At-large Rep. José Aponte Hernández, the New Progressive Party’s (NPP) assistant secretary for ideological affairs and director of the Institute for the Statehood Mission, offered a workshop on statehood late last week to a group of candidates for municipal legislative seats, as well as to those aspiring to represent District 31 (Caguas and Gurabo) in the island House of Representatives.

“Our party’s mission is to fight for equal rights for U.S. citizens residing in Puerto Rico, something that only statehood provides,” Aponte said. “As part of that, the NPP has established as a requirement for running for any elected office under our banner a workshop on the history of statehood and the actions that have been taken and will continue to be taken in support of that ideal.”

“Members of the NPP, at all levels, have a commitment and responsibility to promote [Puerto Rico’s] admission [as a state of the union], as the people have demanded, and we emphasize this in this workshop,” he added.

The workshop was held at the NPP Committee headquarters in Hato Rey.

The vacancy for the District 31 House seat arose after Vimarie Peña Dávila was elected mayor of Gurabo.
