Ports Authority Director Joel Pizá Batiz

The island’s airport towers could be spruced up soon, the Ports Authority said this week.

In social media, Ports Authority Director Joel Pizá Batiz thanked his engineering team for having presented a grant proposal to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the FAA Contract Tower Competitive Grant Program.

“I also want to recognize our architect, Manuel Goicichea, and the contractor, GVG Builders, for their commitment and professionalism,” he said.

The FAA is awarding $20 million to 20 airport-owned airport traffic control (ATC) towers across the country, spanning 17 states and territories. The funding will be used to upgrade existing or build new control towers, delivering on President Biden’s Investing in America agenda that is rebuilding infrastructure throughout the U.S.

“The project’s scope also includes new and updated ATC equipment, which will promote safety in our operations,” Pizá Batiz said.

The funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law goes to smaller and regional airports to improve safety and support critical aviation operations such as commercial passenger flights, cargo flights, emergency services, agricultural aviation, and flight training.

“Today’s announcement is another example of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to modernizing America’s aviation system and keeping it safe and efficient for generations to come,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said this week. “With funds from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we’re helping modernize air traffic control towers in smaller communities that have not always received adequate resources from Washington, D.C.”
