A total of 153 Puerto Rico National Guard (PRNG) soldiers remain deployed in Washington, D.C., as part of a security support mission that has been extended until May 2027, PRNG Adjt. Gen. Carlos Rivera Román announced during a visit to the mobilized troops.

“We are here to listen to them, understand their needs, look after their well-being, acknowledge their dedication, and ensure they have the necessary resources and support to perform their duties effectively,” Rivera Román stated in a written release.

The Puerto Rican troops arrived in the nation’s capital on June 1 to join the operation known as “DC Safe and Beautiful,” which involves maintaining a presence, conducting preventive patrols, and supporting local authorities.

During his visit, the adjutant general toured the area with the soldiers and assessed the conditions under which they carry out their responsibilities, as well as their needs during the deployment.

The extension of the overall mission through May 2027 prolongs security support operations in Washington, although the National Guard did not specify whether the 153 Puerto Rican service members would remain deployed for that entire period.

According to the PRNG, the efforts are being carried out in coordination with the relevant authorities and other National Guard units deployed to the capital.

Rivera Román also highlighted the impact that assignments outside of Puerto Rico have on the service members and their families.

“Leadership means being present, looking after our people, and leading by example,” he said. “We will continue to stand by our soldiers, support their work, and acknowledge the sacrifices they and their families make in service to our nation.”
