The State Elections Commission (SEC) has agreed to evaluate a complaint filed by the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) candidate for House District 5 of San Juan, Gabriel Casal Nazario, against New Progressive Party (NPP) Rep. Jorge Navarro Suárez.
The SEC was unanimous in its decision this week, Casal Nazario said.
The complaint was filed on Sept. 6 following postings from Navarro on his social networks in which he aired videos in front of the Permanent Registration Board (JIP by its initials in Spanish) announcing the delivery of early voting applications.
Navarro’s action violates article 12.2 of the Electoral Code for having entered the JIP in violation of the Operating Regulations of Local Commissions and for carrying out a political campaign within the perimeter prohibited by propaganda venues regulations.
“Now that the SEC has accepted the complaint filed, it is important that Representative Navarro’s actions do not go unpunished,” the PIP and Alliance candidate, one of Navarro’s opponents in the upcoming elections. “First, he disobeyed two SEC regulations and then deliberately positioned himself against the ruling of the organization’s chairperson emphasizing that his actions were not permitted.”
Casal Nazario also noted the importance of, “as we detail in the complaint,” information regarding “at least one official representing the NPP who has been an accomplice of Navarro, whom he referred to as Carmencita and as part of ‘his team.’”
“Therefore, the Complaints Committee that activated the SEC through the commissioner’s agreement must investigate the actions of the representative and all the people involved,” he added.
“At a time when the country demands transparency in the electoral processes, those of us who aspire to elective office must be the example,” Casal Nazario said. “Navarro’s actions reflect the opposite of what the country expects from those of us who are on a ballot.”
