The Front in Defense of the Budget of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) on Thursday asked for a meeting with the Financial Oversight and Management Board through a letter to the board’s executive director, Robert F. Mujica.
The Front wants to discuss the crisis at the UPR given the cuts to the budget that the oversight board and the central government have imposed.
“Year after year, and despite the warnings [from] the university, the [oversight board] and the government insist on a policy of cuts to the UPR, in violation of the budgetary formula,” said María del Mar Rosa Rodríguez, president of the Puerto Rican Association of University Professors (APPU by its acronym in Spanish), one of the Front organizations.
“We know that the attack on the UPR is ideological, but the effects are too detrimental,” she added. “Not only does it sustain the crisis in university education, but it also involves the health of the country because of the consequences at [the] Medical Sciences [Campus] and the Medical Center, it involves the agriculture of the country because of its consequences in the Agricultural Experimental Stations.”
“For this, we demand a meeting with the [oversight board] to demonstrate that the situation is unsustainable for the country and that it has to be reversed,” the APPU president said.
