The School of Health Professions at the University of Puerto Rico’s Medical Sciences Campus announced on Wednesday the opening of the new Multidisciplinary Bachelor’s Program in Radiological Sciences, the only one of its kind in Puerto Rico.
“This professional can work in different settings, such as hospitals, specialized clinics, radiology imaging centers, and other health-related environments,” said Dr. Juan Meléndez, director of the program, in a written statement. “In terms of job prospects, the employment of radiologic technologists in Puerto Rico has shown growth, reflecting constant demand in the healthcare sector.”
Meléndez noted that the new curriculum trains radiologic technologists, or X-ray technicians, in three areas: conventional radiology, computed tomography, and radiology services management. The program was designed to respond to the current needs of the healthcare system with comprehensive training.
Dr. Lourdes Esther Soto de Laurido, dean of the School of Health Professions, said the program offers supervised clinical experiences that allow graduates to enter the workforce with the necessary skills.
Soto de Laurido noted that medical imaging allows for accurate diagnoses, early detection of diseases, visualization of internal organs without invasive procedures, evaluation of the progression of conditions, measurement of response to treatments, and planning of life-preserving medical interventions. She added that medical imaging strengthens communication between healthcare professionals and patients.
The Multidisciplinary Program in Radiological Sciences is now accepting applications for the next academic year.
