Senator Debbie Stabenow, chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, introduced the Democratic version of the Farm Bill on Monday, which includes the provision allowing Puerto Rico to transition to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Luis Dávila Pernas, executive director of PRFAA, highlighted the importance of this legislative achievement for Puerto Rican families and recognized the joint efforts that have made this inclusion in the Farm Bill possible. He assured that PRFAA would continue working with Congress and other allies to ensure this provision would remain in the final version of the Farm Bill.
“This is a historic day for Puerto Rico. The inclusion of the transition to SNAP in the Democratic proposal for the Farm Bill is the result of years of dedicated efforts to ensure that our people have access to essential resources to combat food insecurity. We deeply appreciate Senator Debbie Stabenow, who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to social justice, as well as the Democratic leadership in the Senate for understanding the urgency of this measure for thousands of Puerto Rican families. I also want to highlight the tireless work of Governor Pedro Pierluisi and Governor-elect and Resident Commissioner Jenniffer González Colón, who have worked consistently in the Federal Capital, promoting initiatives that directly benefit our people,” Dávila Pernas said in a press release.
