Days before the return to school, and with the increase in the purchase of electronic devices for educational use by students, the Office of Innovation and Technology Services (PRITS) called on parents to use its guidelines to activate parental controls for mobile devices. The guidelines, available at prits.pr.gov/controles-parentales, provides step-by-step details for activating parental controls based on device type, make and model.

“Parental controls applied to electronic devices are security tools that allow parents to restrict access to certain content or functions on devices such as mobile phones, tablets and computers,” said Antonio Ramos Guardiola, the CEO of innovation and information for the island government. “These controls were designed to help parents protect their children by limiting their exposure to inappropriate or dangerous content.”

Poincaré Díaz, the government’s chief cybersecurity officer, emphasized the importance of recognizing the five cyber dangers to which minors are exposed: inappropriate content, grooming, cyberbullying, sexting and phishing.

“It is crucial to protect our children and pre-teens from these risks that are often hidden through seemingly innocent content,” he said.
