The Department of Recreation and Sports (DRD by its initials in Spanish) began reconstruction work this week at the baseball park, basketball court and community center at Playa Guayanés in Yabucoa with an investment of $1.2 million.
“Yabucoeños will benefit from completely renovated, top-quality facilities for the enjoyment of the entire community,” DRD Secretary Héctor Vázquez Muñiz said in a written statement.
The work includes the removal of vegetation, repairs to the baseball park’s stands, restrooms, broadcast room, and dugouts, as well as improvements to the roof, painting, and a new drainage system. At the basketball court, new backboards and rims will be installed, and specialized multi-sport paint will be applied to the court.
At the community center, the acoustic ceiling will be replaced, new lighting will be installed, and the entire electrical system of the sports complex will be rehabilitated. The work should be completed by early 2026.
“We thank the Secretary of the Department of Recreation and Sports, Héctor Vázquez Muñiz, and his team for launching this project today, which the Playa Guayanés community is so eagerly awaiting,” Yabucoa Mayor Rafael “Rafy” Surillo Ruiz said.
