Rep. Jesús Hernández Arroyo, who chairs the Energy Committee in the island House of Representatives, along with House Finance Committee Chairman Jesús Santa Rodríguez, announced on Sunday that top officials from Genera PR, the private consortium that operates the island’s legacy power plants, must appear at public hearings this Friday in order to render accounts on various issues related to the operation and maintenance of electric power generation.
The summons came amid constant power outages across the island following the passage of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
“We want to have an update on all this information shared in June of this year, regarding the repairs to the plants, and to include how many are already being decommissioned or in the process of being demolished due to disuse,” Hernández Arroyo stressed. “In addition, how much FEMA [the Federal Emergency Management Agency] has already approved and disbursed, and how much more they have submitted, among other details that merit further discussion.”
“We also want Genera PR to provide us with details of the progress, if any, of the repairs to the generation infrastructure and FEMA reconstruction projects,” the Energy Committee chairman added.
Santa Rodríguez emphasized the importance of obtaining information from Genera PR regarding the behavior of generation before, during and after Ernesto.
“It is important to know how this behavior has been and to obtain detailed information on the most recent deficiencies in electrical service due to generation,” he said.
