As part of an initiative led by the first lady of CataƱo, Bethzaida RodrĆguez Torres, the municipality on Thursday inaugurated a new art installation on its waterfront composed of colorful blocks with the word ā€œĆšNICOā€ (UNIQUE). The pieces, designed and made by the municipal printing staff, are painted with bright colors and textures accessible to all, and reinforce the administration’s commitment to art, identity and inclusion.

The structure has become a new meeting point for residents and visitors, who have already begun capturing memories alongside the letters against the picturesque view of San Juan Bay, just as the children at the municipality’s Comprehensive Stimulation Center did.

The initiative complements the autism awareness pier, also located on the waterfront, or ā€œMalecón,ā€ thus consolidating municipal efforts to raise awareness and provide sensitive care to the population with disabilities. According to Department of Health statistics from 2023, it is estimated that one in every 36 children in Puerto Rico has a condition within the autism spectrum, which underscores the urgency of promoting safe, accessible and welcoming spaces.

ā€œThis administration’s commitment to inclusion is evident every day,ā€ Mayor Julio Alicea Vasallo said. ā€œFrom the Comprehensive Stimulation Center to the new spaces on the Malecón, we are committed to ensuring that every citizen feels represented and valued in their town.ā€

ā€œWe have allocated funds for specialized equipment, invested in early childhood education, and expanded services for families with special needs,ā€ he noted.
